The FIGARO project has been discontinued. As a result, this site will no longer be updated.
History
To understand our position and our purpose, a basic understanding of the current state of scholarly communications is beneficial. Here you will find a short history of academic publishing and the scientific journal, as well as some insight into the situation that sparked the formation of GAP and Roquade, the two initiatives that ultimately combined to create FIGARO. The name FIGARO is an acronym partially taken from the names of these previous projects: Federated Initiative of GAP and Roquade.
Mission
Because FIGARO is a mission-based organization, that is, we do not exist primarily to make money but because we believe we can improve the process of scholarly communication - naturally, we want to share our mission with you.
About us
Building upon the groundwork of our predecessors, FIGARO is an innovative and ambitious project with many elements. Here you will find practical project information, such as a basic description of our organisation model, our objectives and an explanation of the benefits that digital publishing provides for organizations and individuals alike. You will also find links to the organisations participating in FIGARO, as well as some information about each of the individuals whose time and expertise make FIGARO possible.
Network organisation
One of FIGARO's main innovative features is our cooperative network organisation. We are in the process of refining our organisation model and here you will find the initial results of our work in this area, as well as continuing updates as we progress through each project phase.
Technology
Technology is an integral part of the FIGARO project. This section provides more detailed information on our plans in the area of technology as well as the initial results of our work. We will continue to post updates here as more detailed information becomes available.
Publications
For those interested in learning even more about FIGARO, we have provided a selection of publications and presentations from various conferences at which FIGARO has been represented.
Finance
FIGARO is a non-profit project with total budgeted costs of EUR 2,0 million and is subsidized by a EUR 1,4 million grant from The Information Society Directorate-General of the European Union. You can read parts of the
project proposal submitted to the European Commission for funding.
